I need help with this book i'm writing...?

its about the life of a dog named sammy, and the first chapter is about when sammy was born, and i need to know what a dog who has never herd of newspaper(a newborn) would describe it- i was thinking "some thing stiff, and papery" but the dog dosent know what paper is either, and i wouldent exactly call newspaper stiff... so HELP!!!
