What would a good beginner's motorcycle be?

I love the clic style of the Triumph Bonneville and am trying to buy one along those lines. I don't need a sports bike or a touring bike and I'm not looking for a lot of cc either. What other manufacturers make models like the Triumph bonnie? Is 40-50 the best mph I can get out of a bike that this?
