Why type of bicycle is good for me?

i plan to start mountain biking this summer but unsure of what type of bike to get. it was quite overwhelming when i went to a bike shop. gary fisher makes a nice bike but a little too pricey. id like to stay around $500 what type of bike would you recommend for an entry level biker? used mostly for trails but some street use too. thanks for the help
